Alexa Burneikis – Music & Dance Advisor

Alexa Burneikis is a performing arts professional with a focus on community engagement, creative placemaking, and the cultural expressions of Latin America, Africa and the Diaspora. She is the Senior Director of Marketing & Programs for World Music Institute and the principal of an independent management, production and consulting agency. With a degree in Cultural Anthropology from Dartmouth College and over a decade of fieldwork, research, international tours and productions, she has developed an extensive expertise in world music and dance, and a comprehensive knowledgebase of multiple genres, artists and cultural forms.

In her 8 years with WMI, Alexa has curated, advised on and marketed hundreds of live performances; she developed innovative new programming, such as the World to Brooklyn series and Acoustic Wednesdays (now Global Salon); she expanded the organization’s outreach through her consistent involvement with various communities and cultural scenes, thought-leaders and tastemakers; and she spearheaded the rebranding initiative that updated the look, feel and tone of WMI’s image and communications.

Through her own agency, Alexa produces events and tours for internationally renowned dancers and musicians, and consults on programming and publicity for major venues, festivals and NGOs. She’s lead cultural heritage travel programs in Cuba, Brazil, and Spain; organizes workshops, exchanges and residencies with dance instructors from around the globe; and has created, directed and produced dance stage productions and concerts in Brazil in anticipation of the World Cup and Olympics. She hails from Detroit, resides in Brooklyn, frequents Rio, and is every molecule a global citizen.
