Trip Overview

Explore the legends and history of Mexico on this 7-day tour designed by CIT’s very own Irma Gonzalez! Immerse yourself in this colorful, ancient, and mystic culture and discover why Mexico City is considered the cultural capital of Latin America.

You will enjoy some of the best Mexican food and try authentic tequila, pulque, and mezcal. You will sing with Mariachis, explore the ancient pyramids at Teotihuacán, and visit the magical towns of Puebla and Cholula. You will visit Frida Kahlo’s home and float down the canals at Xochimilco. Irma will show you everything she loves about Mexico in an authentic and personal way!


    Sample Itinerary

    DAY 1 Mexico City

    • Arrive at MEX airport and look for Irma in the arrival area
    • Visit the Castle of Chapultec

    Atop a hill, this castle features unparalleled views of Mexico City. Built on sacred Aztec site, it has served as an imperial residence, presidential palace, military academy, and the National Museum of History.

    • Head to El Lago, a gorgeous lakeside restaurant, for a welcome cocktail (or lunch if arriving early)
    • Check into your hotel on Paseo de la Reforma
    • Nighttime suggestion: Enjoy live mariachi bands at Plaza Garibaldi

    DAY 2 Mexico City Historical Center

    • Visit the famous Zocalo Plaza, the largest in Latin America, and enjoy a walking tour of the old tour and the Aztec Temple

    The Spanish colonizers constructed their buildings on top of existing Aztec temples. You can still see remnants of the old Aztec city.

    • Visit the Metropolitan Cathedral, the oldest in Latin America, for a tour
    • Lunch at the terrace La Casa de las Sirenas overlooking the Plaza
    • Head to the bohemian neighborhood of Coyoacan and visit Casa Azul

    The Caza Azul, former home to Frida Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera,  preserves many personal artifacts including some of Kahlo’s most famous paintings.

    • Nighttime suggestion: Take a stroll down Paseo de la Reforma
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

    DAY 3 Mexico City – Teotihuacan

    • Travel to Teotihuacan, a UNESCO World Heritage site (~1.5 hr drive)

    Teotihuacan is an ancient city known for its pyramids and well-preserved murals. It was the largest city in the pre-Columbian Americas.

    • Visit the artisan shops of El Quetzal and sample tequila, pulque, and mezcal

    These famous shops feature carvings and decorations made of obsidian stone, one the most lethal weapon used by the Aztecs.

    • Explore the Avenue of the Dead, running through the center of Teotihuacan and visit different temples
    • Lunch at La Gruta, a gorgeous restaurant inside a cave
    • Return to Mexico City
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

    DAY 4 Mexico City – Puebla

    • Travel to Puebla, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and explore its magical old town (~2.5 hrs drive)

    Puebla is a gorgeous colonial town known for its stunning architecture, rich culture, and distinct cuisine (especially desserts!).

    • Lunch at El Comal for delicious Poblana food, right in front of the old plaza
    • Walk down the famous Street of Candies and try some local desserts
    • Visit the neighborhood of Artists which features more than 45 active workshops of painters and other artisans
    • Enjoy a mystical Legends Tour with an expert guide
    • Experience a private folkloric music and dance performance
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

    DAY 5 Cholula and Angelopolis

    • Take a 15-minute drive to Cholula, the oldest city in the Americas (est. 500BCE)
    • Enjoy an expertly guided tour of Cholula and visit the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Los Remedios, an amazing church built on top of an indigenous pyramid. You will explore the ancient tunnels inside the pyramid.
    • Linch at Ciudad Sagrada for gourmet Mexican food
    • Visit a local artisan shop of talavera to learn about these ceramics
    • Drive to Angelopolis and enjoy a ride on the huge observation wheel
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

    DAY 6 Puebla – Mexico City

    • On your way back to Mexico City, stop at the canals of Xochimilco, and enjoy an authentic lunch and live entertainment aboard your own private gondola

    As you float through the canals of Xochimilco, you will experience live music and enjoy delicious authentic Mexican food. You will see why Xochimilco is beloved not just by the tourists but by local residents as well.

    • Return to your hotel
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

    DAY 7 Mexico City – USA

    • Visit the national shrine of Mexico, The Basilica of our Lady of Guadalupe

    One of most important pilgrimage sites for catholics in the world, millions visit this shrine every year. Even for non-catholics, the symbolic importance of the Virgin of Guadalupe is integral to the daily lives of local Mexican citizens

    • Lunch at Monte Cristo for international and exotic Mexican seafood (time permitting)
    • Head to the airport for flight check-in and departure
    • Meals: Breakfast
